While plenty of high school seniors in the Phoenix area opt for their senior photo sessions in the desert to showcase "home" aka the desert, others don't want the desert and saguaros as their backdrop.

One popular option is Downtown Phoenix, which Boulder Creek senior twins Kyle and Kayla chose for their combined senior session. There are plenty of advantages to choosing this option, including:

• A wide range of looks or backdrops. You can get a downtown on the street vibe, near unique or architecturally attractive buildings, like Orpheum Theater. There are parking garages and colorful murals.
• It's easy to find good light due to the tall buildings. This will make closeups and skin look beautiful!
• Adventure. A shoot downtown is always part adventure, as you never know what you'll find.
• Typically not crowded. It's easy to find spots that avoid crowds and passers-by.
• Looks great with summer or winter outfits.
• And best of all, you can get the blurred out (what we call bokeh) look with the twinking traffic lights in the background.

One of my favorite venues for dancer photo sessions in the Phoenix area is Scorpion Gulch, the historic remains of a general store and residence built in 1936. The roof is gone but the windows, door frames, and walls full of beautiful rustic texture lend themselves to beautiful lines and angles that complement dancers' movements.

Dance ambassador Kalina was beautiful in a recent photo session. Ethereal and elegant in her pointe shoes and flowing white skirt, the stone backdrop is perfect. The golden hour light at the end of the session is always the icing on the cake.

One of the most popular locations in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas for photo sessions -- whether it's for high school seniors or families -- is DC Ranch Market Street.

It has a huge range of backdrops -- textural concrete and brick, barn doors, stairs, a tunnel, lots of nice open space with an upscale market/restaurant feel in the background, a bit of nature, and just an overall great vibe.

One of the most sought-after spots here is this beautiful textured concrete wall. When I bring clients to this location, they always ask for the "grey wall", or when they see it, proclaim, "there's the wall."

Boulder Creek senior Chase knocked his session out of the park. His red school golf polo and black pants look amazing against the beloved grey wall while the blue outfits complement the brick and nature backgrounds.
